Monster, CareerBuilder Losing Traffic Race To HotJobs

It could be an uncomfortable 60 minutes tomorrow for Monster ’s CEO when he presents the company’s 2nd quarter numbers during a conference call with Wall Street analysts. Yahoo Finance says analysts are expecting Monster to earn a penny a share on revenues of about $225 million. Last year for the same quarter, the company had sales of $354.3 million. In the first quarter of this year, Monster had a loss. I have no particular insight on what the revenue and expense numbers will be

Why This Recession Has Been So Tough on Recruiters

This recession has been merciless to recruiters. I don’t have any statistics, but anecdotal evidence indicates that thousands of recruiters have been laid off and that hundreds of recruiting agencies have closed their doors. Sometimes the recruiters who been laid off have just been unlucky enough to have worked for an organization that is failing or in an industry that has been strongly affected by the recession. Yet, others have been laid off partly because of performance or attitude.

The road to somewhere (maybe). Tracking applicant-to-hire.

Would you sign up to an expensive trip with the promise of getting somewhere nice?  Would you expect to know what it would look like when you got there, know when you had arrived and how long it would take?  I'm sure you'd also want to know what you'd need for the journey, if there were any additional costs, and what would happen if for any reason there were delays; in fact you'd expect compensation for delays wouldn't you? So why is it that very few people have the same expectations when they invest money in recruitment advertising? We come across so many advertising campaigns that think they know where they are going but have no idea of how they will know (measures) and no contingency plan for when they don't get the results they had hoped for; other than more money. Here's what a simple plan should include: Clearly defined goals (tend to exist albeit not too specific). Well crafted advert copy (more often just a job description).

Interview tip of the day: Transform your interview into an enjoyable conversation vs. a dry Q&A session

If you have been offered an interview by a law firm, generally the firm’s hiring group has already determined that you are qualified for the open position (at least “on paper”).  An in-person interview is a great way for a firm to learn more about your personality and the way you present yourself, and to gauge if you would make a good cultural “fit” with the firm. As much as is possible, try to transform any interview into an enjoyable conversation, rather than a question and answer session.  Many people get nervous in interview situations and wait passively for the interviewer to ask questions before speaking.  Most interviewers will have a better impression of you if you are actively engaged in the interview and also show genuine interest in them and their backgrounds.  Therefore, try to market your strengths and accomplishments as much as you can- however, if a more personalized conversation begins, let the conversation flow.  In doing so, you will hopefully have presented yourself as someone that your interviewer would be happy to have as a colleague. Zero Cost recruitment strategy

I know the cost of recruitment systems have dropped through the floor compared to the heady days of 1999 when most people didn't even know how to spell e-recruitment (or was it Erecruitment) and i-GRasp was still an infant (and no one ever gets the spelling right, even today) but it is getting worse or better? Facebook Pages are free. Facebook Events are free and the largest event system on the web (allegedly)

Younger Workers Getting The Axe; Older Workers Getting Jobs

CareerBuilder says unemployed older workers are having a tough time finding jobs. A survey released last week says only 28 percent of workers over 54 laid off in the past 12 months found new jobs compared to workers 25-34 who are quicker at finding work. In that age group, 71 percent found a job within 12 months. As a result, says CareerBuilder, 63 percent of the 55 and up group have applied for lower-level jobs, including entry-level positions and even internships
