Do You Want Attention or Respect?
Seth Godin has an interesting post today that dovetails with something I’ve been thinking - he talks about the difference between grabbing attention and having people want to buy from you: Michael Jackson, Fidel Castro and Sarah Palin created drama. Paying attention, though, is the not the same as buying or respecting. It’s possible to achieve both, but not easy. I was thinking about this after seeing a couple of stories about people who found creative ways to look for a job - you know the kind of story - the guy who walks around downtown Manhattan with a sandwich board, or the one whose wife makes a website for him called www.myhusbandneedsajob.com.
A Pretty Sweet Internship
A select group of interns, dubbed with unfortunate corniness FUNterns, are putting in 15 hours a week with Nestle as ambassadors for the Butterfinger brand while working full-time jobs or keeping busy elsewhere. It’s an innovative program which kills two Nestle birds with one stone: using social media (online user-generated videos ) to market candy, and providing job experience that potential employees may not get elsewhere
Why Leaders Need Stories: A Lesson from Don Hewitt
"Even the people who wrote the Bible were smart enough to know, 'tell them a story.' The issue was evil in the world, the story was Noah.... Now the Bible knew that and for some reason or another I latched on to that." That was Don Hewitt, creator and executive producer of one of the longest running show in U.S. television history, 60 Minutes , explaining the "secret" of his success. According to Steve Croft, a 60 Minutes correspondent, Hewitt did not concern himself with issues per se; he focused on stories shaped by those issues, be it war, consumer fraud, health investigations, or celebrity profiles.

Direct Recruiting Strategy
If you have yet to put any real effort into your Direct Recruiting Strategy in my view, time is running out! With signs of life in the economy once again, and adverts for Christmas already being added (for example) to e-mail footers, I reckon that Christmas will be better than most business leaders will publicly state, and consumer spending will just keep on rolling throughout January and beyond. The knock-on effect will be that businesses will need to re-focus their direct resourcing efforts to ensure they recruit direct instead of relying just on recruitment agencies. Or, if they choose to go down the agency route (nothing actually wrong with this) they need to ensure they compensate their agencies well as they will have plenty of business to choose from. For details on how to develop your own DIRECT RECRUITING SKILLS take a look at our current Social Recruiting Workshop and Google Adwords for Recruiting Workshop .
Why Leaders Should Lighten Up
With the economy in a coma, a pervasive unease has settled on businesses. Executives worry about the state of the company; employees fret about losing their jobs. What's a leader to do? Lighten up! Work, especially when the stakes are so high, is serious enough that a manager shouldn't add to the tension by over-managing or going around with a sour puss. It is up to the leader to inspire hope and confidence and one way to do it is by spreading some good cheer.
Turnaround Talent: Turnaround Search 911
It's been a long, hot summer. Dog day afternoon. Far too many gifted executives caught by the undertow of the economy. It is as if we -- the keepers of talent -- have been standing on the beach as we watch companies, colleagues, and loved ones dragged out to sea. But we are the lifeguards, the company-guards, the keepers of the flame and of talent. When business plans fail, it is talent that drives a corporate turnaround. For nearly a year, colleagues in executive search have put on a brave face: they've witnessed profits plummet as companies stopped hiring C-level executives. Phone 911. But our comatose economy is showing signs of stirring. Our practice is picking up turnaround searches from vast financial institutions who have had their playbooks rewritten, and who have regulators as referees. For other clients, we're conducting confidential searches to replace senior executives who are not matching force with the increased demands of the economic downturn
